Reflect and journal on 21 selected Psalms, examining what they say about God and how they connect to your life today; all while forming (or enhancing) a habit of journaling and prayer.
Psalms Journal: A 21-Day Devotional Journal
Psalms Journal invites you to meditate on one Psalm each day for 21 straight days, guiding you through the process of journaling your observations, reflections and responses to God’s Word. You’ll then convert your thoughts into prayer prompts for praying into the day’s Psalm.
The goal of Psalms Journal is to help readers form (or enhance) a habit of journaling and prayer. The concept relies on the notion that it takes three weeks to develop a habit, thus 21 Psalms. The list of included Psalms is subjective, and does not imply their superiority in any way.
Our ultimate goal is for you to know the heart of the
living God, to cry out to Him through journaling and prayer, and to strengthen your walk with Him.
Key Benefits of Devotional Journaling
Focus
Journaling forces you to slow down and think–to truly ponder and meditate on God’s word as you formulate your written response.
Retention
The process of wrestling with God’s word and journaling your response helps you remember what you read and study.
Reference
Journaling helps you track what God is doing in your life, creating a reference you can revisit in the future.
Key Reasons to Journal the Psalms
Honest
Journaling the Psalms helps us discover the honest emotions expressed within them, but it also helps us to make an honest appraisal of our own hearts.
Authentic
Journaling the Psalms helps us learn how to be authentic and transparent with God. We learn that it is not just OK to tell Him exactly how we feel, it is what God desires.
Relationship
Journaling the Psalms opens our eyes to the fundamental truths of having a relationship with God. The praises and prayers found in the Psalms teach us how to worship Him.
The Psalms Journal Process
1) Be Still & Pray
Each day begins with two pages dedicated to helping you be still and pray, focusing first on the words of Psalm 46:10, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Readers are encouraged to pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance.
2) Read & Meditate
Readers are invited to read and meditate on what the Psalm says, reflecting on words or phrases that strike them, circling or underlining words or phrases that stand out to them.
3) Journal
Three pages are provided each day for the journaling portion of the process.
There is one page each for observational, reflective and responsive journaling. The prompts found on these pages include: Which word or phrase in the Psalm struck you most significantly today? As well as: How does this Psalm connect with what is going on in your life right now?
4&5) Review & Pray
Each day ends with two pages dedicated to prayer.
First, in the “additional thoughts for prayer” section, we stop to review the thoughts/emotions expressed in the Psalm and related prayer points.
Next, the user is prompted to organize their prayer efforts by adding prayer points into the appropriate section of the A.C.T.S. format on the final page. Prayer points are drawn from the Psalm itself, the day’s journal entries, and the “additional thoughts for prayer” section.
Finally, bring everything from the day’s session to God in prayer.
